The story behind it
In Italian folklore, La Befana was too busy sweeping her house to join the three wise men on their way to Bethlehem, and set out after them too late. Ever since, she is said to fly in on her broom on the night of January 5, the eve of Epiphany, sweeping up as she goes and filling children's stockings with sweets.
