The story behind it
In the classic 1925 Jazz Age novel he narrates, Nick Carraway moves to Long Island in 1922 to learn the bond business, and buys a dozen red-and-gold volumes on banking and credit. He rents a small house in West Egg, right next to a huge mansion whose mysterious owner throws enormous parties, and he ends up telling the whole story.
