The story behind it
Saint Anthony the Great, also called Anthony of Egypt, lived from about 251 to 356. As a young man he gave away his family's land and went into the Egyptian desert to live a life of prayer. So many people followed him for guidance that, as Saint Athanasius wrote, the desert became a city of monks, and he is honored as the father of Christian monasticism. His feast day is January 17.
