The story behind it
Long before candy bars, a favorite Christmas sweet was the comfit: a small candy made by coating a seed or nut in layer after layer of hard sugar, and people were enjoying them by the 1600s. The treat danced into Christmas lore when Clement Clarke Moore's poem A Visit from St. Nicholas, first published in 1823, pictured children asleep with sweets dancing in their heads.
