The story behind it

Edmond Rostand's 1897 play follows Cyrano, a Gascon cadet, poet and swordsman with a famously large nose, who secretly writes love letters to Roxane on behalf of the handsome Christian. In Act I he answers a heckler by listing far wittier insults than the man could think up.
