The story behind it
On October 3, 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation setting apart the last Thursday of November as a national day of Thanksgiving, after years of letters from the magazine editor Sarah Josepha Hale. Americans have celebrated it every year since, and the after-dinner nap came along for the ride.
