About this design

The story behind it
In Stave Two of Charles Dickens's 1843 A Christmas Carol, the first spirit looks like a child and an old man at once, holds fresh holly, wears a tunic trimmed with summer flowers and has a bright jet of light on its head. It carries a candle-snuffer cap to dim the glow, and it takes the story's hero back through his own earlier Christmases.
