The story behind it
O. Henry's short story The Gift of the Magi first appeared in The New York Sunday World on December 10, 1905, and was collected in The Four Million in 1906. On Christmas Eve, a poor young couple, Della and Jim, each give up a prized possession to buy the other a present: Della sells her long hair to buy Jim a platinum chain for his gold watch, and Jim sells the watch to buy Della a set of jeweled combs for her hair. The narrator ends by calling givers like them the wisest of all.
